- "I asked the chief here if they knew when this fire would be contained and he got very serious, lowered his eyes and said very gravely, 'It's far too early to know.' It's like he's given up hope."
- "Even if the winds die down, if they ever ever die down, that is, the fires are not going to stop."
- "Looking around at the situation, you want to put up a white flag and say, 'Mother Nature, you win!'"
