The God of Hell last night at
the Geffen. It's terrible. You'd think with a Sam Shepard / Jason Alexander (he directs) pedigree, there's be something to enjoy about the play, but it's junk piled on junk. Why was this play put up? Basically it's a semi-absurdist diatribe about how the Bush administration is tricking the poor simple folk into joining their war crusade. This might be interesting if the audience were say, people from Wisconnsiin, but staging this crap in front of cushy rich Malibu liberals is almost criminal. All this play does is reflect the audiences self-satisfaction back on itself. "Aren't we so progressive?", they'll coo to each other as they step into their SUV's. Ugh. Pointless, pointless crap. And unfunny, too. Poor Bryan Cranston: Find a better play to star in. I love you.
