As it looks today,
according to Survey USA numbers as plotted by Chris Bowers. Now, go ahead, get giddy for a minute if you have to. Finished? So, does this mean that the country has suddenly gone all eco-loving, pro-choice, faggy? Um, hardly. It's just further proof that the "blue state vs. red state" divide is a myth. The fact that the map can switch so fast is part Bush incompetence to be sure, but mainly the quick switch is proof that Americans aren't particuarly beholden to
either political party. It's not just that the American populace is a fickle one (cuz we really are), it's that we don't really like either party. Dems would be wise not to fall into the "See, America really loves us, they really really love us!" trap the Republicans did. Sure, the GOP got to spend a couple of years rubbing it into their liberal intellectual friends noses at Beltway parties, but now thy're gonna lose the House (possibly the Senate) and walk away with a massive "Oh, shit we started a war, blew the budget and managed to reach levels of corruption in twelve years of power that the Dems couldn't manage in 40". In short, .5% really isn't, after all, a mandate.
