Firing My Staph

Hi all.

Apologies to just about everyone for being incredibly M.I.A. the past two weeks. I caught a bout of MRSA, a really fantastic antibiotic-resistant staph skin infenction that leaves you with painful ulcers and a fever. I originally got it earlier this year via a spider bite and the meds didn't kill it all the way, so it came back to taunt me again. Also, I sprained my ankle. I've been laid up and pretty much out of comission, crying and calling for a priest. It's been fun, but it seems I'm going to survive. I haven't had the heart to send away the old Mexican ladies in black crinoline that I hired as professional mourners. Every time I get up from the bed they keep pushing me back down, shouting, "No guero! Usted está muriendo!" Whatever that means. Somebody send help.

So, I'm going to be in Boston later this week with la famalia, which means I'll have plenty more time to blog and write.

Hugger, my NaNoWriMo (check out their new swanky profile page!) continues to come along slow and steady. I've talked before about how I hate first drafts, but this project's done a lot to change my view on what a first draft is. Rather than expecting a fully functional and perfectly structured story out of a first draft, I've taken to looking at the first draft process as a way to get down all the ideas of what you want in the story down on paper. It's more than an outline obviously, but it's freeing not to have to worry about making things consistent, pretty or well- grammatical.

I have an article in the new issue of IN Los Angeles entitled Confessions of a RENThead. Guess what it's about? (Scroll past the main article to find it.)

Alright, I've got a ton of things to do before leaving town, so I'll see you in Boston.
