Is it possible that
Weeds, my favorite new show has already jumped the shark?
*MILD SPOILER ALERT*
In addition to introducing Justin Kirk (who was also at the
Anne E. Wrecksick show on Friday, though I forgot after all the margarita's) tonight's episode ended with a bizarre
Donnie Darko rip-off/parody which just made no sense at all. The last scene from the film where all the principles are asleep in bed and something suddenly falls from an airplane and through the roof of a house is essentially recreated. Is this a genre I don't know about? Is there a film festival specializing in falling objects on suburban communities? Would it begin with
Superman and then go to that episode of
Step by Step where they think a meteorite has fallen from space, but it turns out to be freeze dried airline poo? Or was that
Home Improvement? Or
Married With Children? Anyone remember that episode?
I know both
Weeds and
DD are wacky and surreal views of hyper-suburban towns, but for a show which is just starting out, it seems odd that
Jenji Kohan would want to point out the obvious similarities
by staging the exact same sequence.
The rest of the episode is great. Justin Kirk's character was clearly written to be loved from the get-go. I just hope we don't see him become a motivational speaker/pedophile.
